LYNCHBURG CEMETERY
Lynchburg Tennessee
previously the
LYNCHBURG ODD FELLOWS and MASONIC CEMETERY
On the 6th of July 1874 land containing approximately 4 acres owned by Alfred Eaton of Moore County was conveyed by deed for $500 to two charitable organizations in Moore County: Lincoln Lodge #50 Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Lynchburg Lodge #318 of Free and Accepted Masons.
Attached to that transfer in the deed book was a plot laying out the current design of the Cemetery. There was space for 3520 graves with 120 reserved for the poor.
This property had been in use as a burial ground for over 25 years when these two institutions purchased and organized it. One of the oldest marked graves is that of a two-year-old child named Wesley. The stone bears the date of death as 1847.
Over the years both founding institutions became extinct. With the loss of these two organizations the superintendence of the Cemetery was taken over by interested citizens in Moore County. In subsequent years more property was added to the original area. The cemetery now contains approximately 6850 gravesites with about 2700 of those currently occupied. Gravesites remain available for sale.
The Cemetery is now managed by a board of directors for the non-profit Lynchburg Cemetery Inc. a 501(c)(13) organization. Donations and communications may be mailed to:
